# The store AI assistants shop at

More shoppers now ask an AI assistant before they buy. We built Fernreach Camp Supply, a real Shopify store with invented gear, to show what the assistant gets back. On the left, an assistant asks what a customer would. On the right, the store answers through the same endpoints Shopify gives every store for AI agents. Then the assistant tries to check out, and the store's own rules decide.

## The questions and the store's answers

### We're doing three nights in the Sierra in September, two of us. What tent do you have?

- Halyard 2P Tent, $489
- Halyard 2P Footprint, $49
- Tarn Insulated Sleeping Pad, $159
- Cairn Carbon Trekking Poles (Pair), $139

Found it by asking in plain words. Price and stock come back with it.

### My partner is 6 ft 3 in. Which size of the Driftline bag fits, and can I get it?

**Fit and size:** Regular fits people up to 6 ft 0 in, shoulder girth 62 in, weight 1 lb 14 oz. Long fits people up to 6 ft 6 in, shoulder girth 64 in, weight 2 lb 1 oz. Comfort rating 32°F, limit rating 20°F (ISO 23537). Left-side zipper.

The Long fits up to 6 ft 6 in, and the store says plainly that it's out of stock. No guessing from a photo.

### We already own a 230 g fuel canister from another brand. Will the Ember 2 stove screw onto it?

**Works with:** Screws onto any isobutane canister with the standard EN417 (Lindal) thread, including our IsoPro 100 g and 230 g canisters. Does not fit propane cylinders or white gas bottles. Nests inside the Tinline Titanium 900 Pot with a 100 g canister.

Yes: any canister with the standard EN417 thread. The store also says what it won't fit.

### What comes in the box with the Halyard tent? Do I need to buy stakes?

**In the box:** Tent body, Rainfly, Pole set (1 hubbed pole, 1 brow pole), 10 aluminum stakes, 4 guy lines, Pole repair sleeve, Stuff sack.

Ten stakes and guy lines are included, so the assistant doesn't add them to the cart.

### If it doesn't work out, can we send it back? And how fast does it ship to Oregon?

**Refund Policy:** Returns and refunds Return window: 60 days from delivery. Condition: Gear can be returned used or unused. Clothing must be unworn with tags attached. Water filters must be unused. Fuel canisters are final sale and can't be returned. Cost: The first return on an order gets a free prepaid return label. Later returns on the same order cost $8, taken from the refund. …

**Shipping Policy:** Shipping Ships from: Bend, Oregon, United States. Processing: Orders placed by 2 pm Pacific on a business day ship the same day. Otherwise they ship the next business day. Where we ship: All 50 US states and Washington DC. We don't ship outside the United States yet. Standard ground: 3 to 5 business days in the contiguous US, 7 to 10 to Alaska and Hawaii. $8, free on orders of $99 or more. …

Sixty days, used or not, and 3 to 5 days by ground. Straight from the store's written policies.

## Checkout takes its word for it, within limits

Pick a cart. The assistant sends it to the store's checkout, and the store applies the rules we set for it. These are real checkouts on the test store. Nobody pays them, so they expire and nothing is charged.

- **Stove, two fuel canisters and a pot, to Oregon:** Approved. Ready to pay. The assistant hands the shopper a checkout link with everything filled in, and the shopper pays.
- **Ten fuel canisters:** Stopped. IsoPro Fuel Canister 230 g is limited to 6 per order. Lower the quantity to 6 or fewer.
- **The tent and its footprint, $538:** Stopped. Orders over $400 need a person to finish them. Sign in to your account to complete this $538 order, or split it into smaller orders.
- **The Driftline bag in Long:** Stopped. Sold out
- **Fuel canisters, to Honolulu:** Stopped. IsoPro Fuel Canister 230 g ships by ground only and can't go to this address. Remove it to continue.

### The limits we set

- **A cap on each item.** Four of anything per order unless the product sets its own: two tents, six fuel canisters. Stops a mistyped quantity, or a reseller's bot.
- **A person for big orders.** Orders over $400 have to be finished by a signed-in customer, not handed through by an assistant.
- **Shipping the law cares about.** Fuel goes by ground only, so it can't ship to Alaska, Hawaii or US territories.
- **Nothing that isn't on the shelf.** Out-of-stock sizes can't be bought. Shopify does this one on its own, as long as inventory is tracked.

The first three are a Shopify Function, a small piece of code that runs inside Shopify's checkout. It checks every order the same way, from an assistant or from a person, and the limits are settings the store can change without a developer.

## No plugin. Just a well-kept store.

Every Shopify store already answers AI agents. What they hear depends on what the store wrote down.

- **The store publishes how to shop it.** Each Shopify store lists its agent endpoints at /.well-known/ucp, using the Universal Commerce Protocol from Shopify and Google. That's how an assistant finds the catalog, cart and checkout.
- **The answers come from product data.** Fit, materials, care, what it works with, what's in the box, shipping and returns are labeled sections in every product description, which is what an assistant reads. The same facts are kept as product fields and the description is built from them, so the two never disagree. An assistant quotes them instead of guessing.
- **Policies are complete.** Return windows, costs, exceptions and shipping times are written out in full, so the assistant can answer the question a customer would otherwise email about.
- **Checkout has rules.** Assistants without the store's approval can build a checkout but not pay for it. The shopper gets a link and pays themselves. The rules above run either way.

The assistant on this page is scripted, so it costs nothing to run and says the same thing every time. The store's answers are real: our server asks the store and shows what comes back, kept for up to an hour so the store isn't asked the same thing over and over.

## What we do for a real store

We make your Shopify store the one an assistant can recommend with confidence.

- **Ask your store what assistants ask.** We run the questions your customers bring to an assistant against your live catalog and show you what comes back, and what doesn't.
- **Fill in the answers.** Fit, materials, care, compatibility, what's in the box, shipping and returns, as product fields your team can keep up to date, with policies written out in full.
- **Set the limits.** Quantity caps, review amounts, shipping rules and anything else your business needs, built as a checkout Function you can adjust in Shopify's admin.
- **Keep watching.** Assistants change every month. We check what they see and keep your store's answers current.
